Hey guys,

Sorry - I did not mean to delete the entire last thread, but only parts. Here is the message that Googe posted about our race. Again, my apologies.

THanks,

I apologize about the races this weekend. We are hosting our collegiate mountain bike race on Saturday and Sunday. All day Saturday we will only be using the Lover's Leap area and the Baseball, Highlander, and Hale Bopp trails. While we are racing on these trails everything is open as usual. We are in no way attempting to close down the trails or block people from riding. The arrows have remained up all week indiciating our trail for this weekend. We will have tape up on Sunday marking the course but we aren't closing those trails to other people. Our racers will know there will be several riders in the park. We have hardly a fraction the people that the Outback race had and once our races conclude we will be sweeping the course to clear all markings.

We apologize for any inconveniences. On Sunday we will have barriers up keeping motorized traffic from entering the park until the afternoon when the race concludes.

If you know of a better place for me to indicate we are having a race this weekend please let me know. As far as I've seen this seems to be the only place to post about local events going on.

Please don't let our race prevent you from riding. Feel free to stop by our start finish area on Saturday or Sunday if you're out riding and talk to me. I'll be happy to answer any questions, or talk to you about the use of the park and how we can better coordinate this race with the local community. The collegiate mountain bike racers are very laid back and shouldn't be uptight about meeting other people on the trail.

Maybe if you didn't feel the need to censor my posts, that wouldn't have happened.

First. let me commend those of you who helped out (with marking trails, taking people to the airport, volunteering, etc.). This was YOUR race, Baylor, and would not have happened without those volunteers. However, I must say I was disappointed by the lack of help I saw. In truth, it was mostly your vice-prez (with the aid of his gal) who did the grunt work. Examples? A few...cars coming through and BU riders being asked to go and help with traffic control, more than once, only to be met with indifference or refusal; repeated requests for help with odd jobs and few shows of hands, etc. I doesn't take much kiddos. I know better of Baylor students and know that in the future, you'll do your part.

First of all, I agree that Googe did an awesome job this entire weekend and I commend him for that. However, I feel that there is definite wrong in the afore mentioned message. I had just finished my race and was standing there when the cars came by and the idea was brought up that someone should go over there to where the crossing was. Where my problem lies is that there was no consideration that those that were there had just finished racing, not just today, but the entire weekend and the idea of riding again regardless of using granny gear whatever is somewhat sickening because their legs and mine included could not pull another pedal stroke. And to single those persons out is ridiculous. If you are going to get frustrated (which in itself is uncalled for) then get frustrated with those that didn't race. I'm NOT saying you should because I truely think you are wrong in your thinking completely. And to say that you know better of Baylor students is irrelevant. Did it ever occur to you that those that were not there to help out might, just might have had school stuff to do for example tests to study for homework/projects to do? There are other things we have committments to other than bike racing, and to criticize us for that is out of line.

I can only say that I saw Googe, Judy - from USAC, and two guys that rode down for Googe to verify that signage was still up. I'm not saying no one else helps with these things, but when I was in the park at 11:00 am, it was Googe representing.

I think this person, whoever it is, was saying that they would expect more from the Baylor cycling club.

Saying how tired you were is really no excuse for not helping, if that's the case. I know Googe raced his ass off, had a wreck, and still worked a ton.

Like I said, none of this involves me, and I have no idea who helped, but it should be noted that Googe busted his ass, and that should not be taken lightly or discounted.

Ok, usually I'm a pretty soft spoken person, and just brush things off, but not this time. In case you didn't read, I DID highly acknowledge the work that Googe did. I may not have put it in the same words as you, but I do know for a fact that without him, this weekend wouldn't have been what it had. But like I said, don't just get mad at the racers that were there, there are other people in the club too. Older riders just need to back the heck (I'm being nice here) off. Remember you were young once too. And honestly I could care less what the crap you think because it really is a load of it, but I'm not going to let people rant and rag on just them because that is ridiculous and they're my friends and I'm going to back them up because I know what all was going on yesterday. Get off your political soap box and shut up because there is NO ROOM for politics in biking.

Holmes - nobody flamed you, but in your sticking up for your homies, you also blamed them for not helping. Specifically the folks that didn't race. That's not really standing up, you know??? I think someone was lightly pointing out that they were disappointed in the lack of representation.

I like how folks can be irresponsible and childish because they are your friends, and well, young. Great logic. I hope you are in store for Baylor law. You should rip some court rooms to shreds one day thinking like that.

It's silly that they are pointing out a flaw and you guys turned it into a flame fest.

*I guess I helped. I am not trying to flame, just interjecting what I see as logic.

I'm not trying to be an instigator here. And no I didn't blame the other racers that were there. I'm just saying that if you do have a problem with it then go to the other members that weren't there to help out and see what was going on there. No I'm not singling them out either because we have great people in our club and if they couldn't be there then they couldn't, it really doesn't matter that much to me (call me lazy in this instance, i don't care right now). The thing is, I hate politics and just complaining. We're not all perfect, and we're not super-human either. And one reason I bike (mainly mountain bike) is because it's my way of getting away from all that bull crap, and I hate it when people pull some sort of rank, whatever, and start complaining about little things and/or big things. Biking is not the place for that. Call me biased (and this is not another argument) but especially mountain biking. The culture is so relaxed and easy-going that there is no room to just start pointing out people's flaws (if you so see flaws), or anything like that. And if you do think somebody messed up, then fine, but we all have. And for an analogy, we've all crashed mountain biking. We are all flawed in that sense. But you don't point it out and make a deal about it. Just brush it off and keep riding. Keep the complaining, politics, etc., etc. out of the sport because bringing it in to play only taints and jades the culture and the sport.
