So here's an idea I had to increase interest in mountain biking at Baylor and in Waco:
Roadies have their KOW (weekly mock race with local and Baylor guys duking it out on a pre-established course, for bragging rights).
How about a dirty version of the KOW? Not wanting to step on anyone's toes, I propose we do some sort of mock mountain bike race each week on a day other than Wednesday...here are some ideas:
-Weekly established dirt race, firm times which fit most people's schedules
-Predetermined race course with a map posted online so that everyone can access it easily
-Course can change throughout the year in accordance with riders' wishes as long as a new map is made available
-Nothing too long or too hard. I know some people might want a really tough/long course, but I envisioned this drawing in new riders who are afraid to race. By showing them something similar to racing, we might get more interest.
-Maybe a rider each week can volunteer to be a "sweeper" of sorts. Help the newer riders find the course again, give out pointers, make sure no one gets injured too badly, etc.
-Neutral ride in from a certain point or meet somewhere for drinks afterwards for general chit chat and so that we can establish ties with other riders.
This is all still just in my head (and now on MoJo)....any other ideas/modifications are welcome. If you just hate the idea, let me know. If there are any possible legal issues, definitely let me know. This wouldn't be an event where licenses are required or prizes handed out...just something informal and fun for bragging rights.
Feel free to post here, email me, call me, whatever with ideas you have.
