Greetings fellow Mojo roadies,

I'd like to tell you about a relatively unknown ride I have been doing for the past two years out at Garner State Park: The Hill Country River Region Classic. This year, it will take place on October 12-13 (one week after the MS150 Bike to the Beach).

While it’s listed as a two-day event, Friday is a general BS day: registration, skills clinic, ride on your own and spaghetti dinner. (Its based out of Garner State Park in Uvalde County, so most people arrive Friday afternoon so they have activities planned that evening.)

Saturday though is the main ride day with supported routes of:
34-mile Scenic Cruise
52-mile Challenge
68-mile Classic and the
100-mile Century.

This is only the ride 3rd year so it’s still a young ride and fairly small (200-300 riders) but it keeps growing every year. This will be my 3rd year doing it and it really is a fantastic route. "The 52-mile Challenge and the 100-mile Century include the most spectacular hill climb and descent in Texas" (the infamous Leakey to Vanderpool stretch).

Since this is the same weekend as the Houston-Alamo challenge, I haven't seen many local folks out there; in fact, most of the participants are from either Houston (Bike Barn is a primary sponsor), Austin or Dallas.

Again, since most people arrive the day before you can either camp out at the park or find cabin accommodations near by. While we do have an in-door place to stay in near-by Uvalde, if a large enough group is interested, a mojo-que camp out would be cool out at the park itself.

Anyway, if anyone is interested in doing this, drop me a line. I will be heading out there Friday evening with two or three other friends and we will probably ride either the 52, 68, or 100 mile route.

I've only done one century in a day. Is the infamous hill so bad I won't manage it having ridden to the beach the week before?
Aw screw it . I'm in .

It is pretty impressive.... in fact, I think it is considered by many sources to be THE toughest stretch of road in Texas aside from the Ft. Davis mountains (where the altitude makes it tough if you're used to riding at sea level) or perhaps rush hour on loop 410.

It definitely IS rideable though, just awesomely steep and curvy.

Excellent! If you want to coordinate the drive out there with us or share a ride, we should have extra room.

I'll probably just look for you out there. But I appreciate the hospitality. I've still got to convince the wife that this is a good idea.
How does tht hill compare to the devils backbone? (which is a spectacular ride by the way. )
