Tubing season is over (except for a few foolhardy souls I saw yesterday), so nows the time to ride River Road. Minimal traffic and changing foliage.
If you're feeling brave, turn off on Summit towards the end and attempt the climb. Scarier on the way down - front and rear brakes on, still doing 20+, rounding a blind corner....
I rode it from my place yesterday, got in 30 miles before daylight faded.

I saw the map. How often do you ride it? I'm riding more and more in NB/Marion/Seguin area now, and am interested in riding it. Get back to me when you can.

You hit the nail right on the head with this one. When the foliage starts to turn, it's "fwokin byootiful" (as my Brooklyn friend would say)- the closest thing to riding in New England as you're going to find in these parts. In fact, I choose River Road this time of year to take my non-cyclist friends out on an introductory ride to get them hookd on cycling (minus the hills of course). So far, it has worked, with one of them so hooked, he began racing this spring up in Dallas and has already jumped up to Cat. 4.
Gregg Bellman regularly rounds up a group of folks for this ride a couple of times a month, and then there is of course the Tour de Gruene held through there in November.
It is one of my favorites. If only it weren't so damn far north of me (I live on the far south side of town so its always a bit of a drive).
It really is gorgeous. as a finish of the scenic devils backbone It's definitley a cherry on top!

I've got the map and look to try riding there on Sunday, the 30th. I'm going to be in the area for the ut-TECH game Saturday (Okay, that's the excuse I'm using to leave Houston). What's a good time to ride? Is anyone else thinking about riding it on Sunday?

Hey Ruben
I'll be out Saturday doing something out 10 and Helotes are about 8:00 a.m. But if you've got a mtb come out to comfort if you can get away.
