Leave it to the Temple Daily Telegram to mangle the purpose of the ride. There's a picture in the paper today of some area road cyclists on local streets with the caption underneath saying (paraphrasing): The Ride of Silence's purpose is to raise awareness that cyclists have a legal right to the roadways.

Maybe they didnt do their research---I know I've read local and not so local threads over the last few years and what I can remember it's a ride in memory of those cyclists lost due to accidents---I think??. confused.
So couldnt that be a secondary reason?
You doing any riding this weekend Chris? I think armyrider said he was free Saturday morning --which confused me--because his wife had mentioned sunday morning, I think...also I could be up for either morning.
Actually, I heard people say that, and in fact, it is part of the purpose. It's to heighten awareness of legal rights, while remembering the cat from Dallas that was killed by a bus mirror in May of 2003. It is also to remember any cyclist injured or killed on a bike.
You guys sure you're not just jealous you're not on the "Second Front Page"??? :D
Here is an blip from the Ride of Silence site.
WHY DOES THIS SITE EXIST?
* To HONOR those who have been injured or killed
* To RAISE AWARENESS that we are here
* To ask that we all SHARE THE ROAD
THE RIDE OF SILENCE? WILL NOT BE QUIET
On May 21, 2008, at 7:00 PM, the Ride of Silence? will begin in North America and roll across the globe. Cyclists will take to the roads in a silent procession to honor cyclists who have been killed or injured while cycling on public roadways. Although cyclists have a legal right to share the road with motorists, the motoring public often isn't aware of these rights, and sometimes not aware of the cyclists themselves.
In 2003, Chris Phelan organized the first Ride Of Silence in Dallas after endurance cyclist Larry Schwartz was hit by the mirror of a passing bus and was killed. (Read the full history here...)
The Ride Of Silence is a free ride that asks its cyclists to ride no faster than 12 mph and remain silent during the ride. There is no brochure, no sponsors, no registration fees and no t-shirt. The ride, which is held during Bike Safety month, aims to raise the awareness of motorists, police and city officials that cyclists have a legal right to the public roadways. The ride is also a chance to show respect for those who have been killed or injured.

You and John are of course right, that is a purpose, but the quote under the picture could have been written better. I had to look at the picture for a while to figure out that was you John. You somewhat resemble an Islamic terrorist (in full roadie team kit) in that picture. Pete, I'm on call this weekend so I have to stick close to the house.

So. not to change the subject, where are you all riding this weekend? By the way, the one time I rode with you guys I had a great time. I didn't realize that the small abrasions from my two wipe-outs could hurt so much...getting old sucks. And lastly, I know I talk a lot, but I talked so much because i was super excited to be riding with a group...I had never ridden with more than one person before. Thanks guys.

How much is it for a day pass again? I'm tempted to protest the fact that they don't offer an annual pass to civilians anymore by parking before the park and riding in.
Depending on if I wake up in time, I plan on being there
