Hi everyone... I plan on visiting Flat Rock for a whole weekend on 7/4. I never ridden the TX hill area so looking for some advice you can offer this flatlander.

1. Is there a better trail map then the one the flatrock web site? Is hard to distinguisht he trail marks vs topo marks.
2. Is the place safe for overnight camping on a tent? How are the rain/floods around early July?
3. I don't mind low 90's heat with some hummidity but mid to high 90's with 100% hummidity will kill me. I plan on riding at least 4-5 hrs/ day so should I ride as early as possible or wait until the evening?
4. Do they allow night rides there?

Is STORM or anyone have club rides here? How aobut a nice local 6-12 hour race around the San Antonio area? what are my chances for such event? Even if is within 2-3 hr drive.

Thanks all.

1. doubt it, but it's not really a problem. Trail itself is easy to follow, if tired or heated-out, going downhill on the jeep roads "back to the barn" is usually always easy.

2. definitely safe for camping. the Dreiss' have a class joint. You may get t-storms intermittently, you'll just need to watch the weather forecast. If you ask nicely they may let you use their WiFi (I think they have WiFi).

3. yes, ride as early as possible. The heat has been growing and we're already having regular hits on the trip-digit thing. Heat of the day here is around sunset with it only starting to cool off afterwards. Silly humid in the morning in Austin and easterly, usually, but Flat Rock has it better being more westerly of Austin.

4. yes on the night rides, last I heard.

5. don't know if STORM has anything scheduled, you may want to check on their WWW. There's a small number of other trails w/in an hour or so of drive time from FRR. You may want to check out www.austinbike.com for more info. Closer ones would be trails in San Antonio, the Madrone at Canyon Lake, Reimer's Ranch and Muleshoe Bend.

Have plenty of water, watch out for yourself.

We allow night rides only after being contacted in advance that you are planning one. The rule is, especially for people new to FlatRock, three or more people must ride together for night rides, that's so someone can go for help, someone can stay with a rider if injured. If we don't know you are riding at night, and see your car here, we go looking for you.
