Evil's Triple X-Rated Dropouts. there;s a steel piece that fits in the area that makes up the derailleur hanger. allows for variable CS length, but without the hassle of horizontal drops. on the other side are 3 different/corresponding spots for disk brakes.

This was a few months back when filming a new Digger stunt for NSX6, I think. Not surw which film. But it was apparenty and knarly, almost 50-foot ravine that he tried to clear, did clear, but didn't pull out of it good. How hard do you have to ride to break your femur? Ouch.

apparently Whistler's like the place to be for mtn sports. awesome DH during summer, and awesome snow/ski in the winter. on RM, there's a thread started by BAH (BAH's pic thread) that has some pics from there. the E! channel even rated Whistler as one of the better "party resorts". i don't even know where the place is. i thought it was in Brit. You guys need to come down to SA. We have a nice collection of doubles and step-ups. Some are very good to learn on. I did. I plan on a trip to hit some of the smaller lines at 9th street in Austin soon.

J
01-02-2003, 03:10 PM
Will do. I can't wait to learn how to hit the doubles.

What chu recommend? FS XC bike or XC hardtail?

Profro
01-02-2003, 03:15 PM
It is much easier on a hardtail.

However, I would say what ever you are comfortable with. If you are more comfortable with your FS, then bring it. However, make which ever one you bring, you can lower the seat very low. Plus I recommend the one with the slackest geomtry.

These are the jumps in question...

J
01-02-2003, 03:18 PM
so how does one deal with the sharpness of the lips of the jumps? seems like you'd end up vertical. Do tell, O Profro.

I guess the ones in SA aren't as 'steep' as the ones in Austin? Only the foolish hit the 9th st jumps in austin on a 26, or so i hear.

the Inbred
01-02-2003, 03:26 PM
on bigger jumps you need to mess with the rear brake, but on those jumps in SA, i don't think that's neccessary. where are they at, by the way? that would something cool to do to pass some time one of these days.

Profro
01-02-2003, 03:31 PM
Remember you ride you bike horizontally to the jump, so you and your bike are still carrying enough forward momentum to move you to the downside.

Even on steeper jumps like these and 9th street you can still stay low and "soak" it and not go so high. However pumping the face and getting air is what it is all about. But most people that are learning will stay low, float the jump, and completely miss the landers and land to flat. Which is okay and you'll wreck less this way to begin with. However you do feel the landers much more. Then once you feel comfortable jumping, you can use the lander correctly and it feels like you never even landed.

I suggest before attemping any doubles you need to be able to do this. Jump straight up and down. Before I learned to jump, I used to always fly crooked and almost wreck. This came from pulling with my arms to hard. Jumping requires your whole body doing certain things in order.

Practice jumping singles or table before attemping doubles. You body and bike will thank you. The key is to compress the bike and your weight before the jump. Then off the ramp or take-off, at the right time, extend and go upwards. Don't pull, just jump up and take the bike with you. Its just like jumping on your feet. Compress, extend. Don't pull on the handle bars or pedals. Of course as you progress, you will begin to pull the handlebars to clear high jumps. But to begin don't.

I have never used my rear brake to nose the bike down. That works much better for motorcycles, but I don't think its that necessary for bikes. You can simply push the handlebars down and pull up with your feet.

I'm definately not going big enough. If I was then I would have nothing to work towards.

I have seen the jumps at 9th and I won't even think of jumping the bigger lines. I just want to have some fun on the smaller ones on the perimeter.

WC got some great jumps that I have been learning on. Theres the one on the Whooop de du loop (BMX loop or what ever its called), you know that fun section just before the end. In the middle there is a small table top and big kicker in the reverse direction. Sometimes I'll spend 30 min just in that section :D . Then on the other side of the creek there is that one little loop by that big mud hole that never goes away. that lip is pretty steep, just hit it fast enough and let the bike flow and front end will come down on its own. Fun Stuff

If you guys want we could hook up Sunday or Monday @ WC and learn from each other. I think toonces was looking to hook up then.

there's a double at WC, too. on the parking lot side of the creek. can't tell you where it is, but i can get there. i practice on the things by the creek. there's also one that'll get you some air going the 'wrong' way on the loop under the powerline. i need to go back and see what's on the bmx loop.

oh yeah, i could meet sunday afternoon

Manual:rolleyes:

I tried a buddy's bmx bike the other night. I didn't grow up on 20" wheels, so I didn't get the normal bmx building blocks like manualing, bunny hopping, or jumping. I learned these on big wheels with suspension. Which makes all that stuff so hard. Well anyway, I fully committed to the manual. Pulled up and kicked out...I was holding the most beautiful and coolest feeling manual in the world. Until about 10 feet later I looped out hard. Like a fool I didn't have my right hand on the brake and I couldn't get my brain working fast enough. Feet stuck on pedals...no way to stop...this is going to hurt...BAM! right back on my ass.

It still stands as the longest manual I have ever held.

toonces
01-03-2003, 10:27 AM
It takes commitment. I usually wuss out and dab or hit the brakes, but to learn you have to loop out a few times. I've thought about strapping a pilllow to my backside and spending a day learning the never-ending manual but I dunno...

You know what? It seems as if 24 Le Toy's are saturating the trails as far as that genre is concerned. It's almost like every other bike shot is a Le Toy this, Le Toy that. I didn't even think that company had that sort of production capacity. Or maybe it's the same people posting their bikes all over the place  Real popular bike. Looks damn good too no matter how it's built.

I'm starting this ball rolling on the Canada trip. I'm asking Canucks for info on where to go and where not to go. I can prolly glean plenty of info about CO, and UT from the domestics. My buddy who moved from CO a few years ago tells me to plan at least two weeks for a trip to CO alone so I'm thinking like three weeks for the whole trip, but only riding a few of the good trails and, of course, Moab. Maybe hit some spots north of that before crossing the border. I wanna spend at least three days of solid riding in Canada; five if I can eek it out.

Need to start saving alot of cash.

Whooo Some sick skillz. "Can someone get that door for me." Urban is fun stuff. To bad I didn't know squat about hardware when I bought my fork(XC spec). I have to get it rebuilt after my last urban outing.

Anybody got a freeride fork that they want to trade for a soon to be rebuilt 02 duke race?

Dustin,
You know... You have big bike parts. Just the combo of parts I guess, but it's one of the biggest single piles I've had on the shelf. Lots of stuff in large boxes I guess...

People can't keep their hands off your frame! That ----,
people just feel compelled to stroke it. I'm doing what I can to keep them away, you get first frame stroking privileges.

Anyway, right now all I need is the fork and the wheels built and the bike is ready to build. I'm going to call and check on the status of the fork Monday. The wheels will be getting built this week. Then it will be good to go. Thanks for your patience!

I found some real bike porn: bike pornography

When two bikes love each other, one bike will take it's front wheel off and mount the other bike from behind. Nine months later, a new frame will be born.

the Inbred
02-09-2003, 01:12 PM
he didn't have the lever in yet...i think he was gonna run just a rear brake. and he was probably gonna use that as a pure dj/urban bike so kept the front off for bar spins...maybe.

Anita Handle
02-09-2003, 01:25 PM
you only need a rear brake for riding TLHB.

chasten
02-09-2003, 05:03 PM
riding brakeless adds a whole other dimension to your skills... there's a few things that you can really no longer do, but you'd be surprised by just how much stuff you still CAN do (and by how much more in touch you are with what your bike is doing). i'm partly saying this in my own defense as i'm re-converting my 20" to brakeless as we speak (may just take off the rear brakes, for now).

J
02-09-2003, 10:08 PM
I understand that it's a BMX thing, esp as a dirt jumper, but I would imagine it has very little practical application. I could be wrong tho, since ive seen people (ahem) do 180s and other things that looked like they required brakes.

That's been asked before, but I don't know the real answer. I can't tell if it's a reflector used to take the picture, or really the color of the derailuer. You can get a good thrasher bike for cheap. Specialized makes the P.X series that would be good for budget DJ/Street stuff. Then there's Norco. They make lots of well-priced tough bikes. Very hard to find in these parts, though. Then there's strictly custom joints like Unreal and Hammerhead who can build a bike from scratch to your liking, but you'll end up spending over $2000 likely with decent parts. Which brings us back to Specialized. Their P.2 is $710 MSRP for a solid bike. P.1 is $530. That's about all I know.

cASe
02-27-2003, 12:17 AM
BSS south has a 2003 P.2 just under $700. Small Frame Wuz checking her out today infact. They still have the 2001 P.3 way overpriced.

Bear
02-27-2003, 07:56 AM
I wonder if Fox is doing the same thing many successfull companies are - supporting their OEM contracts before filling the aftermarket pipeline.

Lots of stuff happens that way, not just bike parts either.

chasten
02-27-2003, 10:02 AM
about Fox, i've heard that that's exactly what the issue is.

and about specialized's P.series, you should definitely go down to check one out. relatively inexpensive and a great way to break into this aspect of riding.

you can check ebay, too, for used ones, but.... eh.

the Inbred
02-27-2003, 10:34 AM
yeah, i believe that's the deal. now, i've only taken accounting and MIS, but don't businesses make more off aftermarket items than OEM? especially a mfg like Fox whose product is on like 1 in every 3 bikes out there?

Bear
02-27-2003, 12:04 PM
I think the companies make boatloads more on OEM stuff than aftermarket. The per-item net is lower but the number of items is hugely higher. It definitely works this way for all the computer folks and I would be very surprised if it worked any other way for bike stuff.

Witness the continued success of Shimano, for example, and the fact that SRAM/GripShift did not start becoming a significant player until they started getting shipped OEM.

It is economy-of-scale playing in here, I think.

Norco 5Hun Update
02:26:2003 — Received another update from Roger at Cycle Solutions. He expects to have my bike in by the middle of next week. What's that warm, wet feeling in my shorts...?

as anxious as *i* am, i can't imagine how you must feel. when's that package arriving? it's gotta be any day now...

:)

I haven't heard from him and it's past the middle of last week  At this point, It'll be there when it gets here; I'm not holding my breath. Doing these rides in Comfort has started my riding groove going again so I'll be ready to roll when the Hun gets here. I hope.

Dude, you'd like the Comfort downhill. I don't think it's that rocky, and they have a few booters to make it a little fun.

Surprise, surprise. I still haven't heard about the 5Hun, but someone else called me about a certain street rod that's ready to roll and ready for pickup. I'm gonna murderize everyone on the trails this year. Muwahahaha...

You ready like spaghetti, 853?

check RM...there's a guy who built one up to 31lbs! a guy on Tmbra built his up to 37lbs...that seems super light to me for a frame with that much travel...either way, it's a sweet looking bike.

Where at? I can't find it. If someone can build that up with strong parts and still that light, I may be interested -- i'll be needing a bike for Canada later on :)

Mountain Bike Action has a review of that bike in this months Ed. They didn't seem to be to pumped on it. The bike they reviewed weighed in at 43 lbs and I think that was there major gripe. Ozone's got one for sale (frame) if you want to see it in person.

Alrighty. 31 lbs, $5000? Not worth it. Thing looks like a Heckler for some reason.

Could build a solid bike for <$3000 likely. Mavic F219/XT, Marzocchi Z.1 150, Avid Mechs, Titec bits, Avid Bits, XT drivetrain, choose a crank. Hrmmmm...

okie, the AS-X is $1299 with a 5th Element...
the Bullit is "$1150 with a Fox" (from BSSS).

Ozone also had a Stinky Dee-Lux that was SWEET.

where do you buy your cocaine? miami has some of the cheapest for 80-90% pure coke at ~$80/gm (do the math to see what a pound is).

mary jane varies quite a bit. domestic and ordinary mexican commercial grade chronic will cost you ~100-200/oz. sensimillan goes up to $300/oz and BC bud is ~$500/oz. hydroponic grass is some of the most expensive at ~$800/oz.

I wonder why MJ sells in standard units while cocaine sells in metric units while crack sells by rocks that usually are measured in .1 or .2 gram sizes. maybe the quantity is best described in whole numbers using their respective unit systems.

happy trails, edward

Dustin,
Hey! It's Ben here at Unreal Cycles. Just wanted to let you know I'm going to try to get your bike out the door tomorrow (Tuesday). I ran into the craziest issue while building it up which I should let you know about....Individually they wouldn't have been a big issue, but together it took several days of tinkering to get things figured out. I even got another mechanic in the shop to take a look at this quirky issue. It was experiencing horrendous chain suck and though it works perfectly now, there is some paint that's been scraped off the chainstay right at the bash ring. It's not noticeable from a distance and doesn't affect performance at all, but I do apologize to you about this. Otherwise, the bike looks great and rides even better! I'll get it boxed
up and out tomorrow. Thanks!

You're a bit of a web surfer aren't you? :) I told Roger to pick a shipper that was cheap and reliable. It's either gonna be UPS or FedEx and hopefully, neither will stick me with duties. If it's UPS, I'll prolly get it in two boxes. I dun care how I get it at this point, just so long as it works and such. My lil feller's gonna make a long trip home! Hrmm, so is the Evil, right? Seattle or something? So where's we riding :)

yeah, Seattle...i went to UPS.com and they estimated next wednesday. but i have a family friend who works at the UPS hub(?) in kerrville, and hopefully she'll pick it up for me to save a day. some dude on icepeeps.com has seen my bike..."is your Imp a white one with a Fox fork and dual 24"s? If so I saw it this weekend...nice ride "

i'm all giddy.

I'm giddy too. Well, not really, but, um, yeah. Heh heh.

Both of you bastagess are going to have some major pimp rides. :) Can't wait to ride with ya'll, all those pimp rides might rub off on me. Still might have to wait 3-6 months before I can upgrade. I was thinking 24 Le Toy III, but I don't know if I can support the French right now. Maybe something steel - .243 racing. Still undecided - but I got time.

steel picks -

Endless - top quality. super-duper nice...won't have another batch for 3+months. black...

.243 - damn cheap, damn heavy, but for $450, who cares. you can choose between BMX BB with Hor drops or mtb bb with vert drops. black...

Balfa Minuteman - in-between regarding price. Hammerhead can get you one. a few colors...

i also thing the Cortina 4130 is neato...then there's also BMW Park Bike, DMRs, yadda yadda...

though, i'd probably go with Balfa and get it through Charles.

OK, the LCD is cracked so I can't see anything, but I can still use the POS. So I called and UPS won't ship the bike, FedEx is asking for fucking $500+!!! so it's going via some other carrier and I have to have it delivered to work or else they don't insure it. Jeez, things are getting hairy. I hope they don't wheel that thing to my cube and make me look like a dumbass   :)
