This, from Chris Case, President of GHORBA, on the IMBA visit to Houston in January... also see http://www.ghorba.org/imbavisit.asp
~~~~~
I wanted to share with everyone what the IMBA crew, Scott and Aaryn, willbe doing while they are in town. Avery, the new Trail Care Crew Coordinator, will also be in town from Boulder for part of the week. This is truly a great opportunity that IMBA is providing for Houston. Please make plans to attend some or all of the events. Below is a list all of the events, both public and those that include only the crew and the trail stewards:
FRIDAY, JANUARY 10th - The crew will be looking at the trails in Memorial Park. We will be looking at the current condition of the trails, possible fixes for specific areas, and possible reroutes. The crew and GHORBA representatives will then meet up with representatives of the Parks Dept. and the Memorial Park Conservancy in the afternoon. We will continue discussions on the existing trails, as well as other areas in the park for which the PD would like trail recommendations. The day will end with dinner at El Meson for the volunteers helping with the week's events.
SATURDAY, JANUARY 11th - Trail clinic begins at 9:00 a.m. at the West End Community Center on Heights Blvd (between Washington and I-10). The first half of the day will be classroom work and presentations on trail building, management, and maintenance (i.e., rolling grade dips, contours, speed control, etc.). Lunch will be provided to participants, then everyone will drive to Memorial Park where trail work will be laid out for the next day.
The first day will conclude around 4 p.m.
From 5:00 to 6:30 Bikesport will host an open house open to everyone. They will have refreshments. Come meet Scott and Aaryn and check out the new stuff for 2003 and some of their sale items. www.bikesport.com
SUNDAY, JANUARY 12th - The trail clinic continues at Memorial Park starting at 9:00 a.m. Participants will implement the work laid out the previous day. This work will likely include a repair to an existing trail, so bring shovels and gloves. Lunch will again be provided to those who are working.
The cost of the clinic is $25, which covers the cost of the IMBA Trail building Guide, IMBA socks, and lunch both days. Space is limited to 50 people, so please sign up ahead of time. Please email Larry Pruitt to RSVP at lpruitt@texasamercian.com.
MONDAY, JANUARY 13th - Scott and Aaryn will head to Huntsville State Park to meet with Richard (GHORBA trail steward) and officials there to review the trails, recent repairs, and discuss future repairs. The crew will then return to Houston in the afternoon to meet with the Director of the Houston Parks Department, Roksan Okan-Vick.
The evening will continue with the Monday Night Ride at Memorial Park at 6:00 p.m. (we will ride at 6:15). Once we're done riding, we'll head to Mission Burritos on West Alabama for some great food. Bring your lights, your bike and your helmet. If the trails are wet, we'll do the Urban Assault ride downtown (it's fun, trust me).
TUESDAY, JANUARY 14th - The crew has the day off until 6:00 p.m. when they will go to REI for their presentation on Mountain Biking Around the World. This will also be the January meeting for GHORBA, so please come. It will be a great chance to ask questions, hear about the past few days of their visit, and to meet new people. REI also has a great selection of clothing
and other bike accessories. Refreshments and snacks will be served.
WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 15th - The trail crew will spend the day with people on the west side of town. They will look at trails in the area, go to lunch at Jason's Deli, ride in the afternoon, then head for Westside Bicycles (formerly Westside Schwinn) for an Open House and reception. If you'd like more information on the day, contact June Frye at rebecca.j.frye@exxonmobil.com.
THURSDAY, JANUARY 16th - The crew will head to the south side of town to Jack Brooks Park near Texas City. We are currently working with the Galveston Parks Dept. to begin looking at possible reroutes and other improvements to the trails to make them more usable (they stay wet much longer than other trails in the area). The crew will spend most of the day with local riders and officials in the area, then head back to Houston to meet with Harris County Flood Control, the Houston Parks Dept., PGAL (consulting firm), and GHORBA to review and discuss the preliminary design of the Hill at Sims Bayou (the would-be Olympic mountain bike venue) near 610 and 288. This project is fully-funded and expected to be completed in late 2005.
Thursday will conclude with an open house at West End Bicycles on Blossom St. (near MP) from 5:00 to 6:30. We will then go on the weekly ride around town (20 miles at a moderate pace). Dinner typically follows at Jax Grill or Romanos in the River Oaks shopping center.
FRIDAY, JANUARY 17th - The Houston-Galveston Area Council (regional planning commission) will be hosting a trail symposium highlighting the need for trails in Houston. Speakers include: Jeff Taebel of HGAC, Rosie Zamora of the Quality of Life Coalition, The city of Seabrook, Scott and Aaryn with IMBA, and GHORBA. Over 65 land managers and trail-oriented interest groups (hikers, equestrians, runners, etc) have been invited to attend. I wish I could say that this was open to the public, but space is limited. This meeting will conclude at 1:00 p.m.
The afternoon will continue with a meeting with the Houston Parks Dept., Houston Park Board, and the Memorial Park Conservancy to discuss the trails at Memorial Park. We will talk about options and IMBA recommendations.
We'll head to Double Lake to camp and set up for the Fat Tire Festival. Come hang out with us!
SATURDAY, JANUARY 18th - FAT TIRE FESTIVAL!!!! It will be a full day of biking festivities. We will have a time trial, a poker run, a silent auction, a trials playground for anyone crazy enough to try it, breakfast goodies, a great pasta lunch, and then top off the afternoon with some New Belgium Brewing Fat Tire Amber Ale and the sounds of Moses Guest at 3:30.
You can see the flyer and a complete list of events at www.mtnbikerider.com. We recommend camping, so call to get your reservations soon! The cost of the festival is $25/person and $50 for families, which will benefit the GHORBA trail fund (to buy bridges, etc.) and the Houston Police Department's Blue Santa Program (bikes for kids). You can pay online with our PayPal connection through the GHORBA website. If you'd like to hear the band before you go, you can download MP3s or get their schedule at www.mosesguest.com. (We know the Cyclocross championships are on this day so, come up afterwards and enjoy the music and refreshments).
SUNDAY, JANUARY 19th......We're done!!!!
