haha! I do not have to be in Houston until noon, so I can make this ride after all.
Don't think I'll be riding to Houston any time soon. I did the MS 150 last year, and it was a hard ride split it over 2 days. Probably kill me if I tried to do it in 1 day.

what kind of cassette are you guys running on your road bikes? I am running a 11-21. Is that standard?

I'll be there.

I run an 11-23 (9 speed). Is your bike 8 or 9, I don't remember?
Anyway, for someone who hates to climb as much as you, that is not a good rear cassette sizing. For hill climbing rides you may want to consider something like a 12-25. I don't know how that gearing will be for fast-tempo sprinting type stuff (e.g. Tuesday nighter) but it'll sure make you happier when doing your hill repeat work. If you have an 8-speed shifter, I have a spare 8-speed cassette but I'll have to check the gearing.

I'm running a 12-23 now, and will probably move to a 12-25 or 12-27 when I start doing hill work. It seems that the benefits of tighter cassettes is less variability when changing gears - ie, each shift results in 1 tooth gain/loss. Given that we're used to widely spaced mtb cassettes, I doubt we'd be all that put-off by using something with variable gaps.
actually, I may have a 9 speed 12-25 if you're interested. its the cassette that I have been using on my IF hardtail during the cross races. only 1 or 2 more cross races (maybe, not sure if I'm doing them yet or not) and then I will put the cross rig away for the winter.

hey griz, if you still have one, I'd be interested in your 8sp cassette if it's bigger than 11-21. I run a 42x21 as my easiest gear and I can feel every bit of it on those steeper hills. Well, you've seen it and it aint a pretty site. ;)
I will check tonight and bring it tomorrow if its the gearing you need.

I run 12-25, which seems to be just perfect for Austin. If I did more flat rides I would probably get a smaller cassette.

Ride went well. It ended up being just John Curtis and I, and luckily he knew the usual course pretty well.

Man, I'd hate climbing too with a 21 tooth bail-out gear.

it sucks.
I got everything layed out last night for a cold morning ride. Went to bed at 10:30 and woke up at 12:30 and couldn't get back to sleep - cedar fever or some other allergy crap attacked me last night. Sore throat and lots of drainage.
Way bummed that I didn't get to ride this morning.
But I went to the doctor (don't want this crap to turn into an infection like it did last month) and got some allergy drug samples. Hopefully they'll work!
I've got a closing to attend next Tuesday morning at 9:00am so I'll miss next week too. See the bakery road group in a couple of weeks!
Congratulations John and Jody for keeping the now 6 week tradition alive. Hopefully I'll be able to squeeze out there next Thursday.

Thanks, G-. Hope you and your wifey can make it out there next week!
It was frickin chilly this morning - forgot my new ear warmer thingie, but my freezing toes and fingers kept me from thinking about my freezing ears. ;) By the end of the ride, it warmed up enough for me to feel my toes and fingers again.
Thanks John, for leading the ride - I get lost very easily (just ask my husband).
See ya later! :)
