View Full Version : Lube for chain on road bike?
I'm going to degrease the chain on my new bike. What type of lube should I put back on it? I don't want to use a heavy/wet lube that will gunk up and turn the drive train black. Got to keep the new bike looking schweet!

I personnaly like to use White Lightning, its not too messy and stays on the chain very well. Keep it away from your cables though, its too sticky. Maybe road only riders others have better ideas, anyone?

I use Prolink on both mtb and road. Lasts long, don't gunk, stays quite. Wipe down the chain once a week or so to keep it clean - take it off and degrease it once every couple of months or so to keep it really clean.

I use tri-flow usually. Sometimes I use Pedro's dry lube. I wipe down and relube my chain on my mtn bike quite often, only every once in a while on my road bike...

I have had good luck keeping mtb chains looking and rolling squeaky clean with white lightning in dry conditions. I'm out of that now so I've been using finish line. Works fine I guess. Really though, my preference is to use a SRAM powerlink chain which means I can take it off and thoroughly clean it more often. I need to put one on my roadie so I can show it the love more often.

I started using Finish Line KryTech on the advice of a friend and have been very happy with it so far. It seems to shed gunk pretty well and keep the chain clean looking.

As a degreaser, yes.
WD-40 is the opposite of a lubricant.

It was a joke. I remember using that as lube when I was a kid.

I started using this stuff this month ( was wanting better wet-season lube than what I had been using, so whilst off the bike in Dec did a full drivetrain clean & relube ). Have done some major mud stuff, sand mixed in, etc., been pretty happy with it. Don't need to clean/add-lube more than 1x week and the drivetrain keeps on running quiet no matter what I do to it. I like that.
Runs not QUITE as cleanly as White Lightning, but considering the latter really doesn't like wet season I'm not complaining.
I've a friend that recently did the same clean & relube on his bike 'cept he's using Rock'nRoll, so we're doing a compartive running test - with my side biased that I ride like 2-4x as much as he does.

I slather my chain in South Carolina vinegar based barbeque sauce. Tastes great but it tends to attract dogs in rural areas.

I've tried them all, and for roadbikes Boeshield T-9 is the shiznit. Been using it for years now. Not too heavy, not too light, lasts long enough for 150+ mile ride, waterproof. get it at Bicycle Heaven or Brittons in San Antonio or call around if in Austin.

finish Line or Pedros' are both great lubes. Just remember, dry lube for dry conditions, wet lube for wet conditions.
Check out REI.
Use Blue Dawn dishwashing liquid, the king of degreasers for your chain.

I find that a good dose of very spicy salsa will keep the chain running clean and smooth for a long time, it keeps the dogs away to. :D :D
