It’s impossible to rate welding/brazing quality by looking at a finished frame joint, even an unpainted one. Files, sandblasting, and a good paint job can take care of that. Such a joint will look stellar unpainted, but won’t last. Yet people all the time look at frames and say, “Nice welding/brazing…”

The point isn’t to make you paranoid, just to stop saying things like, “That’s nice welding/brazing,” when you see a painted/unpainted frame. -- Grant Petersen

Dude, that's so far beyond wrong. I can't help but have mixed feelings about it. On one hand, I hope the idiot who stole it doesn't realize what a rare breed he took and will pawn it off thinking it's just another bike, possibly leading to its recovery. On the other hand, I can't help but hope that who ever did take it realizes what he stole and cares for it properly. The biggest shame is if the bastard cluelessly attempts to paint over it to conceal it and it's lost forever.

Damn Brian, you have my deepest sympathies.

Ahhh, home , Philly. I sure do miss it ...NOT!..I went to Temple University, great school but sits in a northern section of the city known as "the bad lands". I am well aware of the fact that the undergrads, and grad students provide a regular supply of high end products for forceful donation to the sorrounding neighbors...stealing in this section of the city is actually a stimilus package... see, new products come in, the are obtained, sold by the wholoesaler that then passes these onto the retailer(usually pawn shop/or crack dealer) that then repackages and sells to it merchants....The police do not even like going in this area and there are a list of other issues they have to deal with ..like staying alive..so I wish this guy luck.

George...brian suspects that the person who stole it knew him and knew he had the bike.

hopefully it was someone he didn't know and they just want some fast cash.

aLaN....stuff like that ya just gotta go for it.

    thanks for posting.

mtbr has grown so much that it's kind of a hassle trying to sift through all the bullshit. i saw a thread about alternatives to cleaner ways of capping a cable's end. heat shrink, paint, solder, super glue. easily the most retarded thread. i stopped going there a long time ago.

    a good day......

"Just got home with my bike. Someone that had seen the CL post saw the bike outside of a bar less than 20 blocks from my house. He called me at 4:30 and I raced down there and it was leaning against the wall of a bar called The Rumba (no lock). I called the police and the officer told the clowns around the bike to clear out, found the couple that was claiming the bike, and told them we were taking it.

I just got home and the bike is still complete - no components missing. And, only one bad scratch that cracked the clear coat. The woman who had been riding it was like 5' 4" (brian is about 5'10") and had the freewheel set up without brakes. Not sure how she was stopping, but she did it without ruining the bike."

Damn, he got lucky. I hope he has come away with some ideas on how to prevent a repeat.

Bike theft is now going to be my biggest fear. Hell, after going through that, I'd be paranoid every time I went out and the bike wasn't in my direct line of sight.

Good news! Maybe he needs a beater bike for leaving locked. I know it detracts from the experience of riding the bike he wants to ride, but I would be paranoid in the future.

Parts of Philadelphia are a war zone. Sometimes you just need to ride your Humvee with the rocket launchers.
