Lone Star Cyclocross Festival - Jan 16-17

The USA Cycling championship cyclocross races for the State of Texas and the South Central Collegiate Cycling Conference will take place at the Lone Star Cyclocross Festival, January 16 and 17, 2010. Racers from across Texas, as well as Arkansas, Louisiana, Missouri, Ohio and North Carolina have already signed up for two days of furious racing action at Travis County East Metro Park. Races are being co-hosted by the University of Texas, Mellow Johnny’s Bike Shop, and Pirate Race Productions, founders of Austin’s notorious Dirt Derby.

Cyclocross is the most exciting form of bike racing, and creates a compelling visual spectacle, as competitors navigate a short, technical course strewn with obstacles that require they dismount their bikes at high speed, leap over the barriers, and jump back on, often at speeds in excess of 30 miles per hour. It is also the most beginner friendly, with specific races as short as 20 minutes being offered for kids, beginners, women and racers over 60.

Anyone can participate in the races. According to Chris Gescheidle of Athletic Volition,
cyclocross is the ideal format for cyclists to try their hand at racing, with short events in a safe, car-free environment. The glorious confines of Travis County East Metro Park is the ideal venue to cheer on your friends and family, with a waterfront pavilion and pier that provide unfettered views of all the racing action, as well as a comfortable indoor setting to take a break. Racers can sign up online at BikeReg.com, at Mellow Johnny’s Bike Shop, from 11 to 3 on Friday January 15, on site the day of the race.

Out-of-town racers looking for the chance to escape to Austin for the MLK Holiday weekend, can take advantage of discounted rooms are available at the Courtyard by Marriot Airport and Downtown locations, both of which are pulling out the red carpet for the participants, offering a bike wash and secure storage.

For more information about the event, contact Andrew Stackhouse at info@pirateraceproductions.com or go to www.lonestarcyclocross.com

There is going to be mud and mayhem. Come race or just watch the carnage.

We are excited to announce that our generous sponsor, Capo Custom, has provided us with a ton of great prizes that we will be awarding to the non-cash paying categories (kids, college, 40+, 50+, 60+, men and women's 4s, 3/4s, as well as women's age groups) in addition to the State Champion Jerseys being awarded by TXBRA.

The good folks from Juan Pelota Cafe will be on site all weekend providing coffee.

The report from folks who rode the course this morning is that there are only a few small muddy sections, and overall the course is in very good shape and running fast, but we still have a small run up going into the Athletic Volition Sand Pits to make sure you slow way down.

We will be at Mellow Johnny's until 7 today if you want to get your number (which goes on the left) and grab some shwag.
