    The do over

My favorite Christmas gift this past edition was waking up on Christmas morning. It's always a good thing to be able to do that.
My next favorite Christmas gift was this picture below that was given to me by my good friends that came to help me out at the 2011 LV100.

I really think they had it commissioned but they swear that is not the case.
This was exactly the scene before me as I crashed, eventually ending my run at finishing that event. EXACTLY the scene of the crime.

Priceless advice from SuperDave last year: "learn what your going to eat/drink on the bike and practice it often"

Last year, I experimented with a bunch of drink combos and found this to work for me.
1/3 a can of FRS (I like the orange flavour)
1 scoop of Hammer Nutrition's Endurolyte powder
Fill the rest with high quality H2O.
It has approx. 30 calories, electrolytes, lots of water.

The Chicken/mashed potato(e) waffles worked well as did the waffles with peanut butter/nutella/honey and I'll stick to those again but also wanted to include something else for variety.

I was talking to someone about Fritos and how caloricly dense they are, so I thought about using them. I remember using them as a firestarter when I was a boy scout... if you ever have a chance light one up. It starts quickly and burns hot, I figure if it has that much energy, it might be good for endurance events.

So I tried some Fritos on our ride this past Saturday. They worked well as far as energy is concerned but hard to chew up while riding. Keith & I talked about the possibility of crushing them up and then adding some sort of binding ingredient.

So, I tried a rice krispy treat recipe but substituted crushed Fritos and using cooked brown rice & gluten free Rice Krispies (made with brown rice)
    1 cup crushed Fritos.
    1 cup cooked brown rice.
4 cups gluten free Rice Krispies
    2 tbs Nutella
2 tbs peanut butter (I use Calve Pindakaas from The Netherlands, the best peanut butter I've ever had)
    10 oz Marshmallows

Heat up the PButter & Nutella and add the Marshmallows and stir until melted.
Turn off the heat and stir in the other ingredients.
    Spread in a flat pan.

I tried one during my ride tonight and it worked well. Very good energy, easy to chew and it settled well.

The next batch I make, I'm going to try and add some dried fruit.

mrs. hello kitty swears by this on longer 3+ hour rides.

the texture (ground up jerky and fat) is not for everybody but the stuff is good fuel and easy on the tummy.

if your at double lake this weekend send her a facebook message and she might bring you a sample.

anything with "ose" at the end of it is CRAP

she adheres to a zero sugar, starch and wheat diet (except beer) and to some extend so do I. She has been doing the pemmican stuff of longer rides for a couple years without any bonks or ill effect. I’ll cheat and have a gu blox or honey stinger waffle but she is totally gooey meat eater on a longer ride.

I would not touch the stuff Tobin is making for his rides with a ten foot pole however it is what works for HIM and that’s all that matters I’m just offering a suggestion.

I do like drinking a “real” Coke with “real” sugar on road rides that last more than 60 miles it’s got enough kick and sugar to negate the bad calories and carbonation that I don’t feel guilty drinking it.

    My two sense.....

Three of your main ingredients are shit food; marshmellows, rice krispies and fritos. You can't start with those and have much good coming out of it. You are trying to make power bars, and there are some very good ones out there which will provide the kind of longer term energy you need on the long rides. And they were developed by nutritionists, not homeboys! Power bars and goo are a good combo, one quick, one longer to power you through the ride.

Some of the heavy oils take forever for the body to break them down, and you want to avoid them.

A guy that has won the Contenental Divide race a few times eats one thing during his rides... EZ Cheeze from a can.

I think it was 2006 that HK & Mrs. HK did any 12hr races and a box of these were awesome i'd grab one and eat it as i was riding out of the check in area.

that was then this is now and i would not eat any of those during a race now.

Another something that sparked my interest in Fritos was JT at the Blazing Saddles 6-Hour race last June. He would roll through the transition area munching on a lunch portion bag of Lay's Potato Chips. I thought his idea was pure genius... high glycemic indexed carbs & salt. Perfect.

He went on to place 2nd in the Men's Open at that race... one spot behind Pro racer, Tristan Uhl.

Tomorrow... 5 hrs. on the trails @ Double Lake Recreation Area. It's in ColdSpring, just North of Houston.

Saturday of Easter weekend, I was contemplating something out in the Medina area that included a bunch of climbing and gravel roads.
