Bikes for Austin

I already asked this question on MTBR, but figured I would get more local here.

I have a Transition Covert 150/150 and a Specialized Demo7 180/195 (spacer removed) and will be moving to Austin in June from Tahoe. Should I keep the Demo? I ride the Covert everywhere and will hit just about anything on it except the bike park at Northstar. Will the Demo just sit in the garage?

Was thinking about selling it and building a DJ rig. I am not a good DJer by any means but I do like to ride them on flowy trails and pump tracks. I just sold my Unreal 6 months ago before I knew I was moving. I would be up for some flying it, but nothing crazy. If I were to build it should it be single speed? Are there fun trails I could ride it on if it were geared?

That flow track looks like it would be fun on the DJer...any other fun trails for a hardtail?

Your Covert will be fun here, and there are places where you will use it to it's full potential (hit us up, we will show you). On the demo: I think it depends on what kind of "get away" time you foresee yourself having. There are a lot of folks here, myself included, that own big bikes. There are a few spots for them, and our hills are fast technical and fun, but they are short and require pushing that is a buzz kill in july. I ride my 6 and 6, long travel hard tail and dj pretty much all the time here in town, but take the big bike up to Angel Fire and the Front range in the summers.

That being said, I think if you see yourself getting out to the lifts in New Mexico and Colorado (only a days drive) a few times a year it's worth keeping. If not, you will maximize your grins per dollar with a DJ, plus it will be far easier to sell that demo in Tahoe than here in ATX (lots of 29er fans here).
There are lots of good DJ spots here with terrain that will help you progress. Plus the community is AWESOME! Lots of good honest folks that will help you along and become great friends in no time at all. ^ especially the guy above me here.

Keep the Demo and add a DJ. Though not on par with quick access to Northstar (and I assume Mammoth), there are plenty of opportunities for weekend road trips to NM.

If u can ride, you should be able to hit everything with the covert. Sell the out of state bike and get a geared 4x/dj bike. Lots to ride on those.

My wife can ride it all too. Any non spandex girls? She has a Syren and a Giant Cypher.

just checked out some vids from angelfire and that place looks fun. will have to make one trip there this summer

Keep the Demo, it can do a lot in this area. I ride a Vp Free as a trail bike here and it does just fine, it has more travel and probably weighs more than a Demo7. Then when you go to Angel Fire your set.

Also check out Pajarito and RoughRider Canyon (which has it's best times when all bike parks are closed for winter). We also usually get in trips to CO (Trestle, Keystone, Sol Vista). And some of us also hit Whistler, Mammoth and Northstar as well. Once May rolls around, shout out to get in on some trips.

you might think it would be too crowded that weekend and not be able to get hotels or ride the mountain but it wasn't bad at all last time i went during that weekend. so definitely worth it.

When I moved back to Austin, my bullitt sat and collected dust for a year. Unless you're going to be doing trips out of state, I don't see a 7" bike getting much use here. The Transition will.

Keep it for a while and see, you can always sell it on ebay or mtbr.

I sold my bullitt frame but kept the front end and wheels and used the parts to built up a badass mtn tandem that slays just about everything it its path, but that's not an option for most people.
