Boone, NC

My whole plan after leaving Austin for Birmingham, AL, was to make it back to Austin in 2-3 years. Well, it's been 3 years and the cards didn't fall that way and now i'm headed to Boone, NC. Once again, I'm moving to a place where I don't know a single person or much about the place. It worked out great in Austin, not quite so much in Birmingham. Anyone know anyone or anything I should know before I go? I know Stackhouse/Stackout(?) is out there, although I don't think I ever met him when I lived in Austin.

Cool Country. Last of the Mohicans was filmed near there and I think Appalachian State is in Boone.

NC is a nice state. I lived in the Raleigh-Durham (RDU) area for about 20 months. The only thing I did not like about the state was the food was BLAND. The state income tax is about 6%. You pay property tax on your vehicle as well as plate fees. Housing property taxes are about 1/2 what they are in Tx. Asheville is very nice. The mountains are nice in that area the trees are huge compared to Tx. I hear Pisgah is nice but I never went. There is supposed to be some really good riding there. Asheville is supposed to be full of hippies. I did have some good food in Asheville (although still not as good at Tx). In the RDU area people were pretty progressive like Austin, not sure about the other areas of the state. There are a lot less people there which is nice for traffic. The beaches are very nice in NC. Way better that Tx. Check out http://www.trianglemtb.com/ they may have some insight on the MTB scene out there. I did notice there were very few good looking women in NC not sure why? All in all not a bad trade. I would think it would be better than Al.

The food might be bland but as someone born and raised in a MidAtlantic state, you have The Best BBQ there.

That and sick riding in NC, and great acoustic music.

I don't about best barbq. Being from Texas, i guess i have a little different perspective. Vinegar based sauce, no beef, and the fact that its almost impossible to find brisket and fajita meat at the grocery store suck.

I lived in Charlotte for about 5 years. NC is a nice place. 2 hours one direction you are at the beach, the other direction, in the mountains. Its still hot in the summer, but once the sun drops it cools down quick so the evenings are nice. You can camp in the mountains and its nice and cool. Overall, its a pretty good place to live.

Yes, it was certainly a provocative statement to make, especially in the Heart of Texas.

I should probably say 'excellent pork BBQ', because best is highly subjective. I do prefer a vinegar based sauce, but do like it to be thicker than they do in NC. I never had brisket until I came down to TX, but I have a hard time finding good pork BBQ here, Franklin being an exception. As for fajita meat, that's just skirt steak, so technically you should be able to buy it, marinate it, and slice it yourself. More effort, but it can be done.

Sorry for the derail, but if anyone knows where to get great pulled pork BBQ in Austin, let me know.
